What's the modern equivalent of a neon electric tester?

You can still get the little tester you're describing but you'll probably have to go to an electrical supply company to get one. And I'm pretty sure that JC Whitney still carries one in there catalog. The tester still has uses even today, but I think most pro's handle everything with multimeter pretty much and a noncontact voltage detector.
