Gaining muscle to help lose weight?

I am a fat body and have been for most of my life. I have tried losing weight before but I can't change my dietary habits. I'm not looking for advice on how to do that - it won't work. My question, then, is this: Would it be possible to gain enough muscle to make my excess calories less of a problem? I know that muscle is more demanding metabolically, so could I lift weights for a few years, put on some muscle, keep eating like an idiot, and not turn into an aircraft carrier?
