Buying my first guitar?

Hi i have been playing guitar now for about 6 months give or take on my dad's acoustic guitar. I know the main chords fot the guitar C G E A D Am Dm Em C7 G7 B7 A7 E7 D7 and i am moving onto barre chords and can play some easy songs. I want to buy an electric guitar and was thinking of a fender stratocaster which cost �400. Is this too expensive for a first guitar and should i wait until iam more experienced to get a better guitar. i practice a lot on the guitar and it is something iwant to learn in depth so there is not an issue that i could quit soon. Also any help on what amp to buy would be appreciated as some say spend more on the ampthan the guitar which i can not afford.
