What does this mean the course is about ?

The description looks like a sociology course, which is the study of how societies are created and function. First, you need to consider who is the "they" who are telling you that you should take the course. Your counselor? Your friends? If the course is required for some reason, and the advice comes from an authority, such as an administrator or counselor, you would probably be wise to evaluate your feelings about it. The way you ask the question gives away a lot of negative attitude, and you cannot learn anything when you are sitting in the back of the room resenting being there.
