How long can chicken sit out of the fridge before you BBQ???

My hubby took frozen chicken and put the marination on them and stuck them outside in the sun to thaw. He left them out there for about 4 hours!! He forgot about them and that's why they stayed out there that long. They were frozen to start with and usually thaw in about 45 minutes to an hour...so they were sitting out for about 3 hours technically. This was last night and my hubby put them in the fridge because we were invited to a different BBQ. So we were going to BBQ them today...are they still safe to eat???
